米20州と首都の司法長官、トランプ政権の法曹界攻撃を連名で非難
［ニューヨーク ２６日 ロイター］ - 米国のいずれも民主党が主導する東部ニューヨーク州など２０州と首都ワシントンの司法長官が２６日、連名でトランプ大統領による司法関係者への脅しを非難する「法曹界への公開書簡」を発表した。
書簡は、政権の意に沿わない法律事務所を標的にした大統領令が相次いで発出されたと指摘。また、不都合な判決を言い渡した連邦裁判所判事を弾劾するようにトランプ氏やイーロン・マスク氏が呼び掛けたことも挙げ、いずれも政敵への報復であり「司法制度および法曹界に対する明確な脅威だ」と警戒感をあらわにした。
大統領令では「ポール・ワイス・リフキンド・ワートン・ギャリソン」や「パーキンス・クイ」などの有力法律事務所が敵視された。書簡は「イデオロギーの違いに対する報復であり、大統領やその支持者と対立するクライアントの代わりに活動する弁護士が所属する法律事務所を罰している」と指摘した。
パーキンス・クイ事務所は大統領令を巡って法廷で争っているものの、ポール・ワイス事務所は大統領と交渉し、大統領令の撤回と引き換えに政策支援の合意に至った。
書簡は「ポール・ワイス事務所が（大統領に）隷従することにより、トランプ政権の戦略に萎縮効果があることが実証された」。その上で「大統領による法律実務への攻撃」を厳しく批判し法曹界が団結して立ち向かう必要性を強調した。
